The title alone does not define the hire. Some companies need a hands-on accounting manager, while others need a controller who owns reporting, controls, close quality, leadership and broader financial accountability.

Start with ownership

List the decisions and outcomes the person will own. Ask who is responsible for close quality, financial statements, controls, audit coordination, cash visibility, team leadership and communication with senior management.

Look at team and company complexity

Entity count, transaction volume, system maturity, reporting requirements, audit needs and team size can materially change the level of leadership required.

Distinguish execution from oversight

An accounting manager may be highly hands-on with close, reconciliations and staff supervision. A controller may also be hands-on, but usually carries broader accountability for the integrity and direction of the accounting function.

Calibrate compensation to the real scope

Compensation should be evaluated against the actual ownership, complexity, location and candidate profile rather than title alone. A misaligned title and scope can reduce candidate response.

Screen for evidence

Ask candidates to explain what they personally owned, improved, reviewed, implemented and communicated. Evidence of operating scope is more useful than title matching by itself.
