Temporary accounting staffing can solve an immediate capacity problem, but the assignment works best when the employer defines the work, systems, timing and level of ownership before recruiting starts.
Define the work before the title
A temporary accountant may be needed for reconciliations, month-end close, AP or AR backlog, audit support, ERP cleanup, project accounting or leave coverage. Define the actual deliverables so the recruiter can screen for relevant experience.
Clarify systems and ramp time
Identify the accounting system, spreadsheet expectations, reporting cadence, work location and how quickly the person must become productive. Temporary staffing is most valuable when readiness requirements are explicit.
Separate must-haves from preferences
Industry experience can be useful, but it should not automatically outweigh direct evidence that a candidate has performed the required accounting work in a comparable environment.
Choose temporary or temp-to-hire intentionally
Use temporary staffing when the need is time-bound or uncertain. Temp-to-hire can make sense when the business expects the role to become permanent but wants an initial working period before making that decision.
